During severe winter weather, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Patrol strictly enforce chain requirements on all mountain pass routes.
All passenger vehicles must have approved traction tires (M+S or 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake) or carry tire chains when "Traction Tires Required" is declared on Snoqualmie Pass (I-90), Stevens Pass (US-2), or Blewett Pass (US-97).
When "Chains Required" is posted, tire chains must be installed on drive wheels of all vehicles, including 4WD and AWD vehicles (unless AWD with snow tires and carrying chains). Penalty for bypassing chain checkpoints is a $500 state fine.
